Study Tips

Tips to Improve Study Skills

  • Develop a study routine, each day and throughout the week.
  • Always try and study at the same place and the same time.
  • Keep a daily “to-do” list
  • Choose one or two places where you can study regularly.
  • Set goals for yourself.
  • Do your reading assignments before the material is discussed in class.
  • Note-taking is also a skill that can be learned.
    • Cornell note taking
  • When it comes to long assignments or projects, it is important NOT to wait until the last minute.
  • No cramming the night before tests! Space out your studying and get enough sleep the night before.

Weekly Tutorial

Weekly TUTORIAL offers students the opportunity to acquire extra curricular help during the regular school day. Students must attend tutorial four times per week (NO tutorial on a late start day), and attendance is taken the same as for traditional classes. Students must attend an assigned tutorial, except for days labeled Student Choice, which provides them with a choice of which of their classes to attend.  Tutorial is a built-in intervention for all students that should be utilized to the fullest. Tutorial is not a time for teachers to present new material; however a teacher may conduct a whole-class review for an upcoming test or students can make up tests during this 35 minute period.

MATH Algebra For Teens -

Level 1A Ages 13–17 Prerequisite: Must have completed Pre-Algebra or 8th grade Math. For students taking Algebra IA in the fall. Algebra IA covers the first half of the Algebra curriculum - usually for 8th or 9th graders. These students will take Algebra IB the following year. Students review basic operations with integers and the laws of exponents. Students practice simplifying expressions and solving equations and inequalities. Students also work with linear and exponential functions and their graphs.

 

Level 1B Ages 13–17 Prerequisite: Must have completed Algebra 1A or Algebra. For students taking Algebra 1B in the fall. Algebra 1B covers the second half of the curriculum. Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials, graph quadratics, solve quadratic equations, extend the laws of exponents to rational exponents, and simplify radical expressions.

 

Algebra Level I Ages 11–17 For students taking High School Algebra I in the fall. (Note: For students taking Algebra IA in the fall, see our Algebra IA class). This class introduces concepts from the complete Algebra I year-long curriculum. Work with polynomials, several common forms of factoring, and many more algebra concepts. Extend your understanding of linear and exponential relationships and engage in methods to analyze, solve, and use functions, both linear and quadratic. You must have a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of math, as well as fractions, decimals, and pre-algebra

 

Algebra  Level II Ages 15–18 Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry. This class is designed for students who will be taking Algebra II in the fall. Students will review the concepts learned in high school Algebra I and apply them to the more challenging problems found in high school Algebra II. Bring a calculator to class.

 

Geometry For Teens Ages 12–17 Prerequisite: Algebra I. For students taking Geometry in the fall. Designed for the student who has passed Algebra I and will take Geometry in the fall, this class will cover learning how to prove basic theorems for segments, angles, triangles, and more. We will apply the Pythagorean Theorem and develop explanations of circumference, area, and volume formulas. Bring a ruler and calculator to class. 

 

 

WRITING

English Composition For Teens Ages 12–17 Does your child write badly or does he/she show promise, but lacks the polish of professional writing? Whichever the case, this class will serve your child well. It will make bad writers good and good writers very good. The instruction uses a very successful new theory that converts the pictures we think with into verbal expression. Students love the program because while it is like a strategy game, they soon begin to see significant improvement in their writing. This class offers the best of all worlds: it is easy to understand, and it is effective. There is homework with this class. 

 

STUDY SKILLS

Natural A’s Ages 10–17 Any student can significantly enhance grades, self-confidence, and chances for scholarships and college admissions by performing academic skills in alignment with the brain’s natural patterns. This makes note taking, reading, studying, memorizing, and test taking amazingly efficient. Students also will discover simple methods for understanding math and other subjects, optimizing focus and concentration, and preventing test anxiety. Registrants of all ages describe this class as “awesome,” “necessary,” and “easy to understand.” 

 

Study Strategies For Teens Ages 13–16 Topics include: practical organizational skills to help you with your school work, as well as how to better manage your time; note-taking techniques (how to summarize and use symbols and abbreviations to stimulate recall of information); how to study for tests; strategies for taking tests and dealing with test anxiety; improving reading comprehension; and writing papers and essays.

 

 

 

FREE Afterschool Tutoring

FREE tutoring will be offered to any student after school from 3:00pm - 4:00pm in the Library Monday - Thursday.

 

Peer Tutoring provided by National Honor Society students will be available in all subjects. 

 

Teacher tutors will be available in addition to the student tutors:

 

Monday - Science Teacher

Tuesday - Spanish Teacher

Wednesday - Math Teacher

Thursday - English Teacher

 

No appointments needed. Walk-in students are welcome.

Mission Viejo Public Library offers FREE tutoring as listed below.  Sessions are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please call the reference desk in advance to sign up at (949) 830-7100 ext. 5105.  Be sure to leave your name, school and phone number. For more info CLICK HERE.

Private Tutors - There are a number of private companies that offer tutoring services. Also, retired and current teachers offer tutoring and will advertise their services. Web search engines is how you can find these private tutors.

www.Quizlet.com  A fantastic free online study guide that's fun to use.  You can create online flashcards, study for tests, practice your SAT, study with friends and there's a mobile app, too.

 

www.Grammarly.com This will check our grammar and spelling online before you turn in your work.  Just paste and copy into the site and it will help you look your best in print.  It also checks for plagiarism before you get into trouble.
